ATTIKO SCHOOL OF ANCIENT GREEK DRAMA - twelve years!

ATTIKO INTERNATIONAL ANCIENT GREEK DRAMA SUMMER SCHOOL

What Is ATTIKO SCHOOL OF ANCIENT GREEK DRAMA?
The ATTIKO SCHOOL OF ANCIENT GREEK DRAMA is a ten day intensive program that explores Ancient Greek Drama from an interdisciplinary perspective. An initiative of actress and theatre director Martha Frintzila and music composer and set designer Vassilis Mantzoukis, the program brings together high caliber artists and teachers from Greece and abroad to engage participants in a unique, immersive exploration of Greek tragedy and related art forms.

When and Where is it held?
The ATTIKO SCHOOL OF ANCIENT GREEK DRAMA is held every year from July 1-10 in the historical city of Elefsina (Eleusis), the birthplace of the tragic poet Aeschylus. Just 18 km away from the center of Athens, the ATTIKO SCHOOL takes place in the Old Oil Mill Factory. In recent years, the factory has become an arts exhibition center and the on-site open air theatre has become the home of the annual Aeschyleia Theatre Festival.

Who is it for?
The ATTIKO SCHOOL OF ANCIENT GREEK DRAMA is geared towards any individual above 18 years of age who is interested in exploring Ancient Greek Drama with an open mind. Since we believe that Ancient Greek Drama can be approached from a variety of perspectives, we invite everyone from professional artists of all artistic genres to aspiring artists, students, teachers and academics to take part.

Our Approach
ATTIKO SCHOOL OF ANCIENT GREEK DRAMA seeks to link the Ancient Greek dramatic theatre to the modern world. In doing so, the program explores the values and dynamics of Ancient Greek Drama on an aesthetic, ethical and socio-political level and how they relate to society today. Thus, the core of the program entails an interdisciplinary approach to Ancient Greek tragedy through theoretical and practical training, including workshops, masterclasses, seminars, film screenings, performances and educational excursions.
The seminars and workshops cover a wide variety of disciplines, including acting, vocal training, dance, physical theatre, puppet theatre, traditional folklore and translation.

MARTHA’S MOTTO ON ANCIENT GREEK DRAMA

“Wishing to nurture a tree that one day will grow lush foliage and bear fruit, we dig deep into the soil to plant the seed that was given to us by our ancestors.
The ATTIKO SCHOOL OF ANCIENT GREEK DRAMA is our contribution to our country’s arid contemporary cultural life.
With the support of leaders from the artistic and intellectual communities, our teachers and students become companions on this expedition. On our journey to the past, present and future of the theatrical praxis, we only carry with us in our luggage nothing else but the texts of the ancient Greek poets. And we hope that this journey that started in Elefsina will continue for the years to come and that it will bring great adventures and knowledge.”
